A ‘Co-Fit’ facility is one that combines Coworking and Fitness, where you can essentially Work, Exercise, Learn, and Be Social. The benefits of this concept are abundant, including: Performance Improvement (mentally and physically), Convenience, Social Interaction with like-minded peers, Continuous Learning, and Saving Money (when combining the two).

In regards to fitness, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that the percentage of adults 18 years of age and older who meet the Physical Activity Guidelines for aerobic physical activity is only 51.7%, while the percentage of adults 18 years of age and older who meet the Physical Activity Guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity is only 21.7%. As these rates fall, obesity rates continue to rise. The most recent research states that more than one-third (36.5%) of U.S. adults is obese. And almost 3-in-4 (74%) Americans are considered overweight or obese! Obesity caused by poor diet and lack of exercise kills some 400,000 people annually in the U.S. alone according to the CDC. Only smoking-related diseases accounted for more deaths coming in at 435,000 annually.

As we focus on careers and providing for our families, we have neglected vital steps in caring for ourselves. While careers are very important, it’s only one of four vital elements: Physical, Mental, Social, and Spiritual. These four should be measured evenly. Unfortunately, the traditional 8-hour workday has put us at a disadvantage. But what if we could combine some of these elements? Below are 4 reasons why we should (and can) accomplish this through the Co-Fit concept:

  • Because the greatest book of all time tells us so – The bible verse Luke 2:52 states that “Jesus grew in Wisdom, and in Stature, and in Favor with God, and all the People.” I interpret this as Jesus grew Mentally in Wisdom, Physically in Stature, Spiritually in Favor with God, and Socially in Favor with all the People. Whether you’re a Christian or not, I find it hard to believe that anyone could argue with the importance of each of these elements. To me they are universal, not just Christian.
  • Because research on the “Habits of the Successful” shows us – A Co-Fit facility (e. Coworking and Fitness) essentially addresses 3 of the top 5 habits of the world’s most successful people, such as Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey, and Mark Zuckerberg. These habits include:

  1. Routines: The most successful maintain a to-do list, wake up 3+ hours before work, listen to audiobooks or podcasts during their commute, network 5+ hours or more each month, and read for 30+ minutes or more each day.
  2. Health: They exercise aerobically at least 4 days per week, and consume 300 calories or less of junk food per day.
  3. Goal Setting: They write down their goals, focus on a specific goal, have a belief in lifelong learning for self-improvement, a belief that good habits create opportunity, and a belief that bad habits will have a negative impact.

  • Because your health depends on it – Re-read the first paragraph of the article and really let it sink in… Which percentage do you want to be associated with? Be different. Be great! Don’t be like that 74% of the masses who are overweight or obese. Don’t be part of the problem, be part of the solution. Your life literally depends on it. What good is financial success if you don’t have the physical and mental health to truly enjoy it or like-minded friends and family to enjoy it with? Google “entrepreneurs exercise” and see for yourselves.
  • Because you owe it yourself – Why wouldn’t you want to integrate your daily routine as much as possible? You owe it to yourself. You will enjoy less commute time equaling less stress and sitting, therefore less weight gain, body aches, and headaches. Not to mention the savings on gas, less frequent oil changes and less frequent tire changes. Integrating your daily routine also leaves less room for excuses and provides more accountability from your ‘Co-Fit’ community. Being able to work on yourself physically, mentally, and socially all in the same location is a surefire way to 10X your productivity in each area.

Strategies for integrating your routine and adopting the Co-Fit concept:

  1. Join a Co-Fit facility – This one seems like a no-brainer, but this concept is fairly new and few facilities with these capabilities exist. The first, true Co-Fit facility is Platt-Form located in Charlotte, NC. Platt-Form’s facility is designed to offer an array of fitness classes, personal training, and even a VTD (video training of the day) membership for members to watch and workout on their own. A typical day here would go as follows: join an early fitness class, do a one-on-one session with a personal trainer, or complete the VTD. From there, one would utilize the showers and locker rooms to get cleaned up, then head over to the coworking space to begin their workday. If early mornings aren’t for you, no worries! There are classes and one-on-one sessions offered later in the morning and afternoon giving you the flexibility to create your own unique work and fitness schedule. Platt-Form’s coworking space also includes motorized stand-up desks and ergonomic stools to continue your movement and foster an active lifestyle throughout your workday.
  2. Find a Big-Box Gym that offers ‘work space like’ amenities – Several larger chains have now outfitted their locations with outlets, good Wi-Fi, and comfortable seating. Check out this article to see if one of your local ‘big-box gyms’ has joined the movement (no pun intended).
  3. As a CEO, implement a Corporate Fitness Program in your organization – Many local companies here in Charlotte such as Movement Mortgage and Red Ventures have state-of-the-art onsite fitness facilities for their employees. That’s one way larger organizations can implement the Co-Fit concept. However, CEOs of smaller companies will likely be best served by reaching out to local fitness studios that offer a corporate fitness program. Here trainers travel to organizations and conduct onsite fitness classes in a parking lot, outdoor grassy area, local park, or even a vacant room within the facility.

It is my hope that this article shines light on the possibilities of being able to integrate our daily routines. I get it, this concept is not for everyone, it’s not supposed to be. But as entrepreneurs, remote workers, at-home workers, consultants, freelancers and the like, we have a real opportunity to 10X our growth and productivity in each of life’s 4 vital elements. Why wait? Integrate your routine today and watch your performance skyrocket!
